Acting as his knight in shining armor when Curtis is assaulted by a hotel chef is certainly a dramatic introduction. Even though Riley knows he'll probably lose his job, he defends Curtis anyway. When he starts busking across the street from the ice cream shop, Riley deliberately plays and sings badly to garner Curtis's attention. Riley correctly guesses that Curtis won't be able to stand the cacophony and will come over to help. Riley invites Curtis to his place so they can work on finding him a better repertoire for his performances. Riley doesn't know why, but he sees that Curtis is hesitant to come with him. Riley proceeds very slowly, not wanting to spook Curtis who invokes feelings in him that he's never felt before and it pays off. When Riley hears that Curtis's ex is back in town and threatening him, he motivates Curtis's friends to devise a brilliant plan which will, hopefully, get rid of his ex forever."

At Inked Rainbow Reviews, Amy says (EXCERPT): "Curtis and Riley both got to me at a much more emotional level. These guys had some heavy things to deal with. Even so, Ms. London did it with the same light touch as with the other stories, blending equal parts tug-at-the-heartstrings and laugh-out-loud fun. Everyone knows Curtis Wilson around the Soho business scene: a hard-working, budding young entrepreneur, who can get you supplies of whatever you need, and always with a joke and a laugh. Only Curtis knows that’s a purely public persona. Secretly, he’s still licking his wounds after being beaten up by his ex-lover, and he’s not about to let his guard down again.

Handsome Riley Richmond was born to be a cowboy, on his father’s side at least. But after his parents’ deaths, he finds himself stranded this side of the Atlantic, an anachronism in the bustling capital, and without financial capital. His consolation is his music, albeit he’s not a very successful busker and he loses his only decent piano gig after standing up for Curtis against a homophobic bully.

After that, they keep meeting, partly by accident, partly by Riley’s design. He’s smitten, and doesn’t mind letting Curtis know. Their music brings them together – Riley’s guitar playing and Curtis’ sharp, sexy poetry are a powerful combination. But Curtis still has some unfinished business with his ex-lover that he’s struggling to handle on his own. Riley intends to be the man Curtis calls on for help, whether he likes it or not. He’ll do whatever it takes to show Curtis that people can still be trusted to be honest and caring – even if it means walking them both into danger.

RWA : Love Between the Covers documentary

"I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity for RWA members to promote the romance genre. The documentary contains scenes from several RWA conferences as well as local chapter conferences. Michael and Wild Bill ride again

Wild Bill was my saving grace. He distracted me from Gray’s charms enough to let me come up for an occasional gulp of air. What remained to be seen was whether he’d haul me to shore and suck the sea out of my lungs, or if I’d end up drowning him, too.

I got goosebumps when I heard that line.

Yup, I said heard.

I’ve arranged for Gomez Pugh to perform Channeling Morpheus for Scary Mary for audio. And it’s a real trip hearing this early series of mine brought to life. That particular line gave me a little thrill because it ended up foreshadowing one of the most dramatic scenes of the series, the rescue gone bad where Wild Bill takes a header off a houseboat. But how could it? It wasn’t only that I hadn’t yet planned out that book at that point. I had written Payback as a standalone story. The novelette Fluid wasn’t even a gleam in my eye.

Kind of cool how things turn out if you stick with them long enough.

My gaze lit on the choker. It was a fancy silver charm with a big green gem set in it, dangling from a black velvet ribbon.

“You like?” he said.

I don’t think he was talking about the choker. But I nodded anyway.

“It’s an antique. I’ve had it for years. The stone’s called a peridot. It’s the only gemstone that doesn’t come in any color but green.” A weird yellow-green that was just like his eyes. I had no doubt that’s the main reason he’d chosen it.

The original germ of the series was the peridot. I was aiming the story at a call for a gemstone themed collection. I’m not sure if peridot was on a list, or if I picked it because I figured rubies and pearls and sapphires were too obvious, and I wanted to write something that stood out.

I think it still stands out. There’s a certain sameness to so many vampire novels these days, that when people say they hate vampires, I honestly can’t blame them. This series is different. The focus is more on the hunter than the vampires, and vampire cliches are turned on their heads. Readers who enjoy vampire tropes just the way they are weren’t keen on the filth and the funk. But readers who approached the series with an open mind were crazy about Michael’s love interest, Wild Bill—the ass of a twenty-four year old, the lungs of a coal miner and the heart of a poet.

“Did you know that roofies would channel Morpheus toward a vampire, send ’em spinning off into dreamland, or was it beginner’s luck? Not just luck, I guess. There’s talent involved, too. You’re a natural.”

The market has changed a lot since the Channeling Morpheus series first came out. Box Sets are popular now, so I’ll be reissuing the series as a pair of box sets so they’llappeal to all the new readers who’ve recently discovered m/m. I’m also revisiting my dear drifters Michael and Bill in a new Channeling Morpheus short that will come out in conjunction with the audiobook.

Don't Stay in School video - my thoughts

This made such an impact on me when I first saw it. All my family for the last 3 generations has been in education - I broke the mould! - and this is a common topic I feel strongly about, especially since I've brought up my own children. Whether you like the video or not, I think the ideas it raises are valid. We need more teaching of life skills in general, whether it comes from school, the home, and/or a combination of both.

I spent a few hours at a local secondary school this week, chatting to year 9 girls (12-13 yo) about career choices from my experience as an accountant. Lots of people contributed and I hope the girls came away with some useful information. But I'd say the best group I chatted with raised the question - what would *I* put into a modern curricululm that I felt wasn't covered at present? And so I raised some of the issues in this video, particularly financial matters, which a LOT of adult, intelligent and mature people still struggle with. And the girls had really good input to it.

There are all kinds of subsidiary issues here - the role of the family, educational resources, money, guidance, the effect on academic measurement, possible resistance from children's attitudes towards adults etc etc. I appreciate them all and don't expect a slick solution. But I was a slightly timid and confused young adult when I emerged out into the workplace, and I've always hoped to build up my children's confidence and knowledge so they don't go through as much angst and awkwardness as I feel I did.

Gosh, rather too much passion, eh?! LOL ♥

It’s a world like this one except for the all-powerful State that’s very firmly in control and the fact that slavery is legal. Jimmy had never really thought about it or the fight for freedom going on around him. He was too busy enjoying his privileged life as an actor on a sci-fi show.

But what is he meant to do when he’s forced to permanently bond to a slave he doesn’t want just because he made one silly, drunken mistake? Does it change who he is, what he is?
Trouble is, Jimmy isn’t sure who he was to start with. He’d never thought about it.

And what about his slave, Nate? Can a slave force Jimmy into learning something about himself?

EXCERPT:
‘It’s not fucking fair,’ was all that kept going through Jimmy’s mind. Over and over on repeat. It wasn’t fucking fair—not fair he was here, not fair he’d be here for weeks, not fucking fair he was being forced to bond with some guy he didn’t even know. How could something like that ever be fair?

Okay, so maybe he’d stepped out of line and said things he shouldn’t, to people he shouldn’t. Said them long and loud. But he’d been drunk, and everyone knew he was an arsehole when he was drunk. He’d just kind of assumed they knew he was he was a friendly, didn’t-mean-it kind of arsehole.

And okay, maybe he had hit someone, but he hadn’t meant that either. He was the kind of drunk that did stupid things they wouldn’t normally—things they didn’t mean. Hit people they didn’t mean to. It wasn’t personal. He hadn’t known who the guy was. Just some random kid, who just happened to have a powerful mother.

Was it such a crime to get drunk and say things he shouldn’t, in front of people he shouldn’t? And hit people he shouldn’t?

Yeah, actually even he knew it was a crime, but shit, this was a hell of a punishment.

He was a good guy really, only the authorities hadn’t seen it like that, and now he was fucking stuck here. Even the minor celebrity that came with being on a TV show with plastic spaceships hadn’t bought him any leeway. But he should have known that, known what a hard, unforgiving bastard
The State could be.

Now he had to pay for his stupidity. Nothing else to do now but suck it up and pay his dues.

But it might not be all bad. They’d told him he was going to be bonded with this guy—which was as near as damn it to fucking marriage—but the man would still be Jimmy’s slave. Jimmy would own him, be accountable and responsible for him. That was supposed to be part of his punishment.
To teach him to be responsible, so in future, he’d act that way toward The State.

Owning a slave. That was a weird concept, but there could be positives.

He wasn’t about to treat a slave the way some people did. He’d seen it—at parties, around, hell, on the streets. Slaves bent over and fucked, passed around for anyone’s pleasure. Treated as slabs of meat. He wasn’t about to do anything like that. He’d be fair, protect him from the perverts. He’d be responsible, just like they wanted, even if it wasn’t fair.

They both knew the score, knew there’d have to be sex, but he knew how to treat a person right. Slaves were people, no matter what The State said. He’d take the free, no-strings sex as a bonus. But people, anyone, deserved to be treated right.

He might not have understood the freedom movement, but he could help one man live an easier life. He’d be doing his small part to make the world a more decent place. He’d be responsible and accept his punishment like a man. Once he got through prison.

That made him feel a little better about everything.

He just hoped the guy didn’t look like the tail end of a rhinoceros.

Impact of EU VAT from Jan 01 on selling ebooks

There's been a lot of discussion and concern recently about the VAT changes coming into effect in the EU in January 2015. Here are my thoughts on it - personal and subjective as they may be!

Basically, anyone selling ebooks DIRECTLY* into the European Union will now have to register and account for VAT.

Previously, it depended on where you were based. US-based authors and publishers weren't subject to VAT.

UK and EU-based authors and publishers had to sell over £81k a year before they had to worry about VAT (I wish *g*).

But now it's all to do with the CUSTOMER's country, not the seller's. So worldwide sales start to hit the VAT radar.
What's more, every EU country has a different rate of VAT, so the net price will be different in every case.
(see notes on how Amazon's going to deal with that below).

*DIRECTLY means NOT through Amazon / Barnes & Noble / All Romance Ebooks / other online distributors. In those cases, the distributor will have to do all the VAT reporting. But it will affect your royalties from these places.

I've put out a brief summary of what the new legislation means HERE on Quids & Quills.

There is a LOT of lobbying going on, asking for help and relaxation of the strict system for small businesses, so things may change.

But at the moment, it all kicks in on January 01 2015.

It's a two-edged thing for me - as an author, and also as a self-publisher.

As a self-publisher, I only use the online distributors like Amazon, so they'll handle the legal requirements (one hopes).
If you use Kindle Direct Publishing they'll have written to you to explain how they're going to fiddle with the book prices to allow for all the different rates.
Essentially, from 01 Jan, if you specify a price of $2.99 (for example), you'll probably get less royalties from it in future.
How? They use the $2.99 as if it included VAT. So they'll take off the VAT - at whatever rate according to the customer's country - and then calculate their 35/70% royalty to you. It'll be a different amount for every country's sales, and inevitably more than the 3% on ebooks we currently suffer from Luxembourg's tax rates, where Amazon are based.
It's a bummer. but I don't actually see any other way of handling it, except to keep the $2.99 before VAT. And then of course, Amazon will charge VAT on top of it, and the customer will have to pay more - or maybe not buy at all.

As an author, I'm asking all my publishers whether they're geared up for it, though it's their responsibility.
But if they don't want to handle it, they may pull out of direct website sales completely and just rely on the distributors. Hopefully it wouldn't mean too many lost sales.
If they *do* stay with website sales, the prices may have to go up, or an inclusive price may have to cope with higher VAT rates like Amazon's strategy. And therefore lower royalties to me.

This is not any publisher's fault, or even the distributors - although the legislation has been brought in mainly to ensure the big distributors (and we know who that is) pay a fairer dollop of tax overall.

But it could be a real burden for small businesses who only make a small number of overseas sales, yet have to keep extra records and pay over part of their profits in sales tax. The concern at the moment is its impact on digital sales overall.
